Vintage Goggles

Over the last few weeks, in the dead of winter, I've found myself with a hankering for a pair of vintage goggles. Not the quote-unquote 80s raver plastic kind of goggles that are a dime a dozen on eBay. Vintage bicycle goggles and aeronaut goggles and anything that looks like it's been in a box for years and years and years. Goggles have amazing possibilities! Here are just some of their virtues:
  • Goggles can add a steampunk/industrial flair to almost any outfit! You'll have people asking exactly where you left your time machine.
  • They are an absolutely great conversation starter -- and people will remember you from those lovely brass goggles you were wearing at your first meeting!
  • They work great as an alternative to a balaclava in the dead of winter
  • You can get them for as low as $10-$15 on auction sites! A low price for a great investment
A few possible catches:
  • They're likely to need elastic replacement or lens cleaning once you get them
  • Glasses-wearers may have to resort to contacts for this! I do not recommend walking around half-blind all day, despite the style perk!
A couple of great places to start looking are the LJ Steamfashion community and this listing of eBAY vintage goggles auctions.
