the first day of snow

(not my image)

I love the first day of snow, when it comes near the end of October, late in the season here, when it’s a complete surprise in the morning and I’m informed by the tune ‘It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas’. I love it because it means I can get back out those knee-high perfect, consigned pirate boots, and because I now have a proper excuse for rarely wearing heels – I’ll slip and fall!

I dislike (not quite hate) the first day of snow because it brings with it some Arctic winds that even polar bears would hide from, because it means that soon I’m going to mark another year of my life past, because I have to wear a sleeping-bag coat and constantly de-layer when I enter buildings. I dislike that everyone forgets how to drive on the first day it snows, even in a relatively snowy city, and that it means I’ll have to bundle up on Hallowe’en night after all.

I hate the first day of snow because it was the day I had to listen to Desperado playing on the oldies radio for the 89485409568096th time this week. REALLY? I already despise most of the Eagles’ songs.
