A Few of My (New) Favourite Things

I’m a free woman! For a short time, at least, my papers and exams have all been written. Expect to see some moving and shaking, and many more posts around here in the future.
For now, some things I’ve grown fond of lately:

I. Dandy Lions

I really like ‘Blue Are Your Eyes’. Download their album for a price you choose here.

II. The Full Nilson

Vancouver-based blogger Leah Nilson is funny and refreshing.

III. L’Oreal Lineur Intense

I still haven’t tried out any gel eyeliner, but this liquid felt-tip has got a special place in my heart. See MakeupAlley reviews here.

IV. Off Our Chests’ new shop!

If you haven’t heard of OOC already, you should check them out! This is a great website waging a war against hate and promoting happiness, while being realistic at the same time. I’d love to see their ‘Don’t Hate on My Happy’ t-shirt in a tank version.

long overdue – not just my library books

Why, fancy seeing you around! Though I had fully dispersed into the stacks? Not quite.
This is something of a funny-anecdotes-to-tide-you-over-and-gosh-I-hope-you’re-still-reading post. I’m not sure what that means.

Recent Activity:
  • Alot of homework
  • Attended the Canadian Society for Continental Philosophy’s annual conference – saw four talks in total! My first conference.
  • Read my first Stephen King novel as well.
  • Listening to many mash-ups – a taste. And revisiting Britney Spears’ singles.
  • Trying to get involved with Voices for Choices on campus
  • Nearly breaking my back and knees in a yoga class.
  • Voted in the Municipal Elections … and both the mayor and councillor I chose succeeded! Goodbye, so long, won’t miss you City-Center Airport.
  • Yearning for Etsy treasures

After my mid-semester papers and exams, I’ll be back with a serious business post or two. In the meantime, I don’t know, have some popcorn.

Ten Little White Lies I tell myself too often

But keep telling, in the hopes I’ll one day delude myself into believing.

“No one cares what you look like today. No one!”
“It’s okay that your wild party days have already gone, since they never really arrived.”
“Your current size is perfect.”
“You’re still a worthwhile human being, though you’re not as talented or thin as the dancers on SYTYCD.”
“You’re not totally bad at web design.”
“Wishing on the first star you see, and picking up pennies from the ground, might just help.”
“You look much better in real life than in photographs.”
“Some day, you’ll get back to studying and remembering all the interesting hobbies you left behind.”
“Those blackheads on your nose and lips will disappear any day now.”
“You don’t have to worrying about dying, not quite yet.”

Stop Trying to Look Like a Rebel

To the kids I see around campus, on the buses, everyday:
  • Stop trying to look like a rebel by disagreeing with everyone just to be different
  • Stop trying to look like a rebel by littering – it’s just gross.
  • Stop trying to look like a rebel, or worse, a hipster, by not taking off your pretentious pork-pie hat inside.
  • Stop trying to look like a rebel by constantly bringing up people who are less mainstream than the next. Especially if you can’t back up your facts.
  • Stop trying to look like a rebel by wearing ‘punk’/’distressed’ shirts if they really cost $80 each.
  • Stop trying to look like a rebel by putting “fuck” in every sentence, we can tell when it’s forced.
  • Stop trying to look like a rebel by acting ~random~ – that died along with nexopia.
  • Stop trying to look like a rebel by liking Green Day, Simple Plan, and other pop-punk.
  • Stop trying to look like a rebel by reading Nietzsche ~because it seems badass~

Things I’ve Learned This Week

% My winter boots are falling apart
% Quebecois films can, on occasion, be very good
% Driving on a snow-packed road is mildly uncomfortable. You have to get your wheels stuck in the ruts, and it’s bumpy… ick.
% Sanskrit Pronunciation
% Japanese contemporary artists are the bomb
% Giving metal a try isn’t a bad idea.
% My real-life bff reads theboobs as well!

Things That Make Me Mildly Uncomfortable

Katharine Hepburn shares my emotion in relation to the following.

  • Standing on a train where it's so crowded you don't have to stand up... you're held there by the pressure of all the other bodies around you.

  • Having the strip club scene from Skins come up on my iPod at the gym

  • Eating the cream cheese icing on carrot cake.
  • Checking a livejournal post and seeing tons of pictures of gorgeous folks.
  • Doodling in my notebook in public.
  • Reading should-be-private Facebook statuses. "Joe is so sorry" "Marla is upset" "Joe didn't mean to hurt you" "Marla wishes he would come to the door and say it to her face" "Joe just went next door" "Marla feels better" "Joe :) "
  • The texture of Nutra-Grain bars. See also: Fig Newtons.
  • That feeling when I'm about to sneeze, but don't.
  • Barry Manilow.
  • When someone's tag is trying to flip out of the back of their shirt. All I can do is watch and hope they notice.
